Behind the Scenes

We are just a bunch of ordinary people with guts to dream bigger than ourselves, a vivid imagination and an ambitious drive to raise the bar of excellence in everything we set our minds to.

It all begins one year before the actual event. After months of researching the theme set, brainstorming creative theatrical concepts, script writing and song selection, we then go into studio production to create the master soundtrack before the team starts choreographing the various dance routines. Around 3 months before the show, from the support staff to the Founder, the entire Dukesbridge team comes together for a day to work on the meticulous coordination of integrating performances from some 500 students across our campuses into one storyline. After this, things start to get really interesting…

Casting

Casting takes place at the beginning of Term 3 with students who have acquired skills taught in the extra curricular drama lessons. All students then start learning the dance choreographies.

Costume making

Led by the Director herself, a team of creative parents and staff get involved in costume making for all the children with input on designs gathered from research over the past year.

Special stage props

Some mechanical costumes often start with a prototype which goes through a process of trial and error. We get quite creative with materials to come up with some of the sets.

Giant stage backdrop

From the time they are sewn together using thick fabric pieces to being handstitched on or finely painted by our talented teachers, our giant stage backdrops take a whole month to be ready.

Rehearsals

3 weeks before the event, the main cast rotates around the campuses so that everyone gets used to the flow of performances, to their costumes and to entering and exiting the stage on cue.

Stage decor

Another team of volunteers and staff spend a few weeks designing and executing the most amazing props which help create the atmosphere of the various scenes on stage.

Roadtesting

We bump in on the eve of the event to set up the stage. We work with sound and lighting engineers to ensure that each scene has the right balance and focus to deliver the ultimate effects.

Final touch-up

When the big day finally comes, the excitement is at its peak. The children get dressed up in their costumes, ready to hit the stage confidently. Lights, camera, action – here we go!

Gallery

Year after year, the Dukesbridge Musical takes on a new theme which not only allows children to experience completely different roles but also allows them to discover in a unique way different cultures, music genres, traditional costumes and folkore dance choreographies. The show is captured by a professional photographer and video camera crew, and the media disc is made available to parents for purchase as a lifelong souvenir.
