“Anou Apran Phonics” – is an online video tutorial series produced by Dukesbridge school during the Covid-19 lockdown in April 2020. It means “Let’s learn phonics” and uses the local Mauritian language, Kreol, to explain the concept of phonics so that children are able to learn the basics of the English language. As from April 6th, a free lesson will be published every weekday as a contribution by Dukesbridge to the broader Mauritian community. We apologise for the sound quality as it was recorded using phone devices in the teachers’ homes during the confinement period.
The Guide
Phonics has replaced the traditional way of learning the alphabet globally in recent years. We no longer start by learning the names of the letter of the alphabet, instead we learn their sounds. Using a series of flashcards, we teach children to recognise the sounds of the letters so that they can start deciphering words and read words using the Phonics method even before they know the names of the letters. In this video, the Director of Dukesbridge goes through the correct articulation of the sounds of each letter as a compass for the entire programme.
